Are You Happy with Your Smile? Dental Information for Your New Year’s Resolutions

December 26, 2014

A recent survey by the American Academy of Periodontology  revealed that nearly 80% of Americans are not satisfied with their smile. In addition, more than half of the people surveyed stated that a smile is the first thing they notice about a person when they meet. Many people are not happy with their smile and have no idea why. The mouth and the teeth are a complex collection of shapes, angles, and colors.

At Matthew Nawrocki DMD, MS, we are dedicated to educating Orange Park, FL and surrounding communities about oral health and undoubtedly esthetics play a part in this. Below we will discuss a few things that dentistry can offer you if you decide to make an improvement in your smile a part of your New Year’s resolution.

How Can Restorative Dentistry Help?

Do you have decayed teeth? Are they discolored and unhealthy? Restorative dentistry may be a solution. Restorative dentistry is a broad topic. It is basically the diagnosis and management of diseases, abnormalities, and injuries of the teeth.

Tooth decay is a disease. It is caused by bacteria that make the oral environment more acidic. This causes a more prevalent population of “bad” bacteria in the mouth causing teeth to lose structure and break down. Your dentist will remove the decayed tooth structure and replace it with a filling material or a crown to restore proper form, health, and function. Although in this blog we are mainly speaking about esthetics, it is important to note that tooth decay is a progressive disease that must be stopped when present.

Restorative dentistry can also correct esthetic issues. Discolored, misshapen, chipped, and fractured teeth can be prepared and covered with a tooth colored composite material. The results can be indistinguishable from what the teeth looked like before problems occurred.

Orthodontics – Could Adult Braces be a Solution?

Many people know they need orthodontics (the branch of dentistry that prevents and corrects irregular teeth). Many people still do not know what orthodontics could do for them. Too few adults agree to orthodontics because they do not want traditional wire braces. For many of these people, Invisalign is the answer. Invisalign has revolutionized dentistry and orthodontics. Invisalign is a series of clear plastic trays that fit over the teeth. These trays are worn for a few weeks each then traded out for the next in the series. They gently shift the teeth to the exact position determined to be ideal by the dentist. Benefits of Invisalign over traditional braces include:

  • No painful wire tightening visits
  • Easy removal during mealtime. This allows you to eat whatever you desire
  • Easy removal for cleaning the teeth. Traditional braces are difficult to clean around and often leave permanent discoloration of the underlying teeth
  • The trays are nearly invisible so most people in conversation do not even see them

Veneers

Veneers are a wonderful treatment that can truly be transformative. A veneer is a thin porcelain shell that is bonded onto the visible surface of a tooth. They can correct misshapen, discolored, cracked, or chipped teeth. They can also fill in unsightly gaps between teeth. Many of the Hollywood smiles that you see are the results of veneers. Dental Implants

Never before implants did we have the ability to replace teeth so predictably and successfully. An implant is essentially a titanium root replacement. It is gently placed into the bone. After a period of time where the bone and the implant grow together, a crown can be placed on the implant. The result is a functional and esthetic tooth replacement. Gum Disease Treatment

A recent study revealed that over half of Americans suffer from gum disease. Gingivitis is the beginning stages of gum disease. Symptoms include gums that are painful, bleed upon brushing and flossing, swollen, and red. Dr. Nawrocki has a myriad of treatments for gum disease. This is best treated as early as possible because gingivitis can progress to periodontitis which destroys the bone and the supporting structures of the teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can be one of the easiest and most affordable esthetic dental treatments in existence. Professional teeth whitening works and is surprisingly easy for many people. Whitening can be done in office or in the comfort of your home. If you would like to learn more about whitening, feel free to click here.
