Most people have never heard of a prosthodontist. Dr. Matthew Nawrocki is a prosthodontist in Orange Park Florida. Many Americans when asked would have no idea what a prosthodontist is or what a prosthodontist does. We are dedicated to providing dental and oral health education to everyone within reach. Our blog is a great place to provide that education. Today we will talk about Prosthodontics. We welcome questions or comments at any time!
Prosthodontics could also be referred to as prosthetic dentistry or dental prosthetics. A prosthodontist is one of the nine recognized dental specialists by the American Dental Association. He or she specializes in the prosthetic replacement or restoration of teeth.
What Does a Prosthodontist Really Do?
If you were to break it down into simple terms, a prosthodontist focuses on three main areas. First, the replacement of teeth. This can include dentures, partial dentures, bridges, implants, etc. Second, a prosthodontist can focus on complex care management. Finally, cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is not one of the recognized dental specialties so it most closely falls into the category of Prosthodontics.
Many people would ask how this differs from the general dentist. After all, a general dentist can replace teeth through all of the above mentioned methods. A general dentist can undertake complex care and nearly everything that a dentist does can somehow fall under cosmetic dentistry. The answer to this is simple. The head and neck is a complex environment. The mouth and teeth in particular are an intricate arrangement of angles, shapes, nerves, blood vessels, and soft and hard tissue. This entire mechanism has to operate in a complex acidic environment and is completely unique to every person. The complexity of the oral situation often requires one with specialized training to adequately diagnose and treat. The above mentioned categories when treated flippantly can result in irreversible damage that can cripple the eating or esthetic functions of a person.
Why is Dr. Nawrocki Unique?
Upon completion of his prosthodontic training, Dr. Nawrocki began practicing in Orange Park. Many prosthodontists focus solely on Prosthodontics. Dr. Nawrocki’s practice focuses not only on the replacement of teeth, complex care, and cosmetic dentistry but nearly all other aspects of general dentistry. In most situations a patient will visit the general dentist and upon the completion of certain diagnoses the patient is sent to a prosthodontist. Not only is care provided under one roof but the treatment planning process can be completed with a level of higher certainty and knowledge that will provide the patient with the optimal outcome.
