A woman covering her mouth.Porcelain veneers are arguably the best option in dentistry for hiding imperfections in teeth. While porcelain is an incredibly durable material that can last for many years with proper care, it doesn’t mean it’s indestructible. Dentists need to fix damaged veneers for a variety of reasons, whether it’s from using teeth as a tool or from forced trauma.

If you’re dealing with a cracked porcelain veneer in Orange Park, it’s time that you visited a dentist who can tell you your options.

Is a Cracked Porcelain Veneer a Dental Emergency?

Since veneers are largely a cosmetic treatment, breaking one doesn’t typically warrant as a dental emergency. However, if a tooth has been buffed down enough, it may not be safe to have it exposed for long periods of time, especially if you continue in the behavior that caused the damage in the first place.

It can also depend on what type of veneer you had before the damage occurred. Composite resin veneers generally require less enamel to remove, but won’t last long due to their lower durability. Porcelain veneers last much longer and can withstand more force, but typically involve more enamel removal to place and look natural.

Regardless of the veneer you have, it’s important that you don’t put off your repair. After all, you got veneers to make your smile look more attractive, and losing a veneer jeopardizes your appearance.

Chips and Fractures

The size of the damage will largely determine whether the dentist will repair the veneer or replace it entirely. If a small chip or hairline fracture is present, it’s entirely possible that you can have the veneer buffed down. This will even out the veneer to make it look natural to your surrounding teeth. If you want to avoid further damage and save the veneer, it’s important that you get to the dentist right away.

Larger chips can typically be treated with composite, which fills the space left in the veneer. However, this varies based on the composite resin used and the skill of the dentist performing the repair. Make sure to visit the dentist who placed the original veneer since they’re more likely to have the materials for this type of procedure. While there are no guarantees, it’s likely to extend the life of your veneer, helping you save money.

What if the Veneer Comes Completely Off?

The dentist should be able to simply reattached your veneers if the bonding agent breaks down and it comes off in one piece. If your veneer comes off, make sure to keep it safe and confirm that no cracks or chips are present. If it has any breaks in it whatsoever, it typically cannot be placed back onto teeth with confidence. Veneers that cannot be re-bonded need to be replaced.
